![]() ![]() Grooves parallel near the frets from the fret machine I guess on another. Little things, imperfect binding, on one. Two of the three newer Gibson's I've had just had crappy build quality. I've had a handful of nice Gibson's, and none were as well thought out and executed as well as the Carvins. It also has a painted neck which I don't like as much as my first ones satin neck.īut all three of them were absolutely perfect in any subjective way. White just like my first one, but it has a les Paul style bridge-which I don't like as much as Carvins. I'm an old guy and just couldn't wrap my head around the 5th string.I sold it after I gave it its first flaw-a tiny ding in the back of the neck.Ī few years ago I bought a DC-125 that had a middle pickup added by Carvin later on. It was quilted ruby red (I think) maple and was incredibly beautiful. Then I bought a Bunny Brunel 5 string off eBay maybe 8 years ago. I bought my first one maybe 20 years ago, a DC 127. I got a Holdsworth headstock put on the ST300 in memory of the H2.I've had 3 Carvins. I have a Carvin CS6 which I absolutely LOVE, so when I was speaking to the Carvin people about sending this one back, I ordered a Carvin ST300, which should be ready in 6-8 weeks. It's not Carvin's fault, but Allan has some wierd tastes in guitars, but I still love him.& Carvin. This guitar is just all midrange & treble with no bass or warmth. Tonally, to get the kind of tone I like on the video, I had to turn my amp treble from 5 to 0, the bass from 5 to 9 & that wasn't enough so I turned the treble on my Xotic BB pedal from neutral to -3 & the bass from neutral to +5. This one is an oddity & I have no idea what Allan wanted it like this. The neck is set so far out that it actually starts to hurt my wrist to extend it to play close to the nut for long periods & it's so FAT. As soon as I let go, the neck heaviness kicks in & the neck starts to tilt downwards. However, it feels really foreign to me when I put it on. It's beautiful & the quality is as good as you can get. It may be someone else's dream guitar, but unfortunately, that person isn't me.īelieve me, I REALLY want to keep this guitar. ![]() This isn't Carvin's fault, as they followed Allan's instructions. Thankfully, Carvin offers a 10 day back guarantee, & as much as I REALLY want to keep this guitar, it's just too hard to play & the tone is too flat & lifeless for me. Perhaps if it was made out of mahogany with different PUs & a smaller neck, but then again, that wouldn't be the Holdswoth model. Overall, it's really a quality, amazingly built, innovative instrument, but it's not for me. It's almost like playing a baritone guitar. The neck is also set very far out, even more so than an SG, which makes playing in the lower frets very difficult. I have no idea what Allan does to get his amazing tone, but he has to be running a pre amp, EQ or something to add life to the tone. Using the settings that I normally have on my gear, which works with all of my other guitars just doesn't cut it with the H2. I've had to turn my bass up by 50% & reduce the treble by 50%. it's very even sounding, but just sounds 'not alive', for a lack of a better description. This may work for Allan, but to me, it sounds very thin & lacking in bass & warmth. I wanted the exact model Allan uses, which is alder body & neck w/ ebony fingerboard. The neck is HUGE with a ton on shoulder & the whole guitar is a tad neck heavy. This guitar was definitely built for someone else, namely Allan Holdsworth. The frets work, PU height, action etc all were meticulously done. The overall craftsmanship is as nice as humanly possible in a guitar. This has one of, if not the nicest, quilt maple top I have ever seen & the finish, which is antique brown, is amazing. I finally got my Carvin Allan Holdsworth Model a few days ago. ![]()
